Kiawah has many private homes that are for rent from the owners.  Many of the largest and nicest ones are located behind a 2nd security gate on the Vanderhorst Plantation.  You can see them in this section.

The Vanderhorst family were the original european settlers on the island.  They built a beautiful large plantation home on the North side of the island away from the ocean near the marsh.  The home as well as the grand driveway is still there and privately owned and can be seen from the road.  A bike path goes up the original live-oak-lined driveway toward the home.
